Early Sown Pulses for Low Rainfall SA
Exploring early sowing to boost lentil and faba bean performance in SA’s low rainfall farming zones.
Key objectives
Identify early sowing opportunities for lentils and faba beans across low rainfall South Australia.
Quantify yield and establishment benefits from early sowing at different trial locations.
Provide regionally relevant recommendations for growers and advisers.
Promote findings through integrated extension including the SA Grain Legume Project.
About the project
Can we shift the sowing window earlier to improve pulse performance in low rainfall zones? This project is testing just that—evaluating early sowing opportunities for lentils and faba beans across SA’s Mallee and Mid North.
With trials at Lameroo, Waikerie and Appila, MSF and partners are identifying the best windows for early sowing, exploring yield benefits, and helping growers improve establishment on hostile soils. Findings will be shared through the SA Grain Legume Project and Online Farm Trials to support practical on-farm decision-making.
